Ultherapy Q & A

What is Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® harnesses the use of ultrasound energy and uses it to perform rejuvenation techniques on the skin. Ultrasounds have been used for over 50 years for the diagnosis and treatment of many different health conditions. The energy waves released in an ultrasound procedure target the deepest layers of skin, stimulating the production of collagen and rejuvenating the skin. Increased collagen production works to tighten and tone the skin. Because the treatment is non-invasive, there is minimal risk of infection and the patient experiences very little down time, if any. The patient can return to their normal day to day activities as soon as they leave the office

How Long Does a Treatment Last?

It may take up to three months for the final results of an Ultherapy treatment to become apparent. The treatments take less than an hour to perform and produce long lasting results for many patients. The results of the procedure can last for months to years depending on the patient’s lifestyle. In most cases, the skin’s baseline texture, tone, degree of wrinkling and photodamage will play a role in how many treatments are needed. For many patients, one treatment will provide the desired results. Other patients whose skin has lost much of its elasticity, may need touch ups as the months pass. Those who have healthy and well-toned skin at baseline will have the longest lasting results.

Does Ultherapy® Have Side Effects?

Ultrasound therapy has been used for five decades since being approved for use by the FDA. Patients may experience very mild reactions to the Ultherapy procedure in terms of redness and slight bruising near the treatment area. The skin may appear flushed and warm to the touch for several hours after the procedure but will usually dissipate rather quickly. The area near the treatment site may tingle and be tender to the touch for a day or two. Numbness may also occur for a short period of time. Any side effects that appear should be reported immediately to the doctor who performed the procedure.
