Skin Cancer

What signs or symptoms does skin cancer cause?

Skin growths (or lesions) that are oddly shaped, oddly colored, or those that change in size or shape are among the most common signs of skin cancer. Sores that are slow to heal can be another telltale sign. Skin cancers can appear different depending on the type of cancer that's present – basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma – and their appearance can change over time, sometimes subtly and sometimes dramatically. They can occur anywhere on the body – even in the fingernail and toenail beds and in areas that have never been exposed to the sun. Seeing Dr. Dele-Michael for regular skin cancer screenings, and especially if you notice any new growths or spots on your skin, is a critical part of ensuring skin cancer is caught in its earliest and most treatable stage.

How is skin cancer diagnosed?

First, Dr. Dele-Michael will perform a detailed skin exam to look for signs of skin cancer, including a careful evaluation of any lesions or discolorations. When a suspicious lesion or area is identified, she'll take a small sample of skin tissue, or biopsy, which can be examined under a microscope.

How is skin cancer treated?

When a lesion is determined to be cancerous or precancerous, Dr. Dele-Michael will use special techniques to remove the lesion and evaluate the edges under a microscope to ensure all the cancerous cells are removed. This technique enables her to remove the entire cancerous area while ensuring the scar is as small as possible. Depending on the extent or size of the lesion, the type of cancer present and your individual risk factors (including a personal or family history of skin cancer), she may also recommend having your lymph nodes tested to ensure the cancer hasn't spread systemically.
