Laser Tattoo Removal

How does laser tattoo removal work?

Laser tattoo removal uses the highly focused energy of lasers to break up the ink pigment so it can be removed via the body's natural waste removal system. Different pigments respond to specific laser frequencies. Black is the easiest color to remove with lasers, but other colors can also be removed successfully with lasers.

What happens during treatment?

Before treatment, your tattoo will be assessed so Dr. Dele-Michael can decide on the best approach for its removal. During the actual treatment, the skin will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic may be applied to the area before the handheld laser device is moved across the treatment area. Dr. Dele-Michael may need to make adjustments to the laser during treatment to address different pigments.

What happens after my treatment?

Afterward, an antibacterial ointment will be applied to the area to prevent infection. You'll need to continue to apply the ointment to ensure the area heals properly. The day after treatment, you may bathe or shower as long as the area is not scrubbed. Your skin may feel slightly sore or appear red, much as when you get a sunburn. The treated area may also form a scab which should not be removed. Once healing is complete, the area will continue to fade.

Are there side effects?

Laser tattoo removal is very safe and effective, but there is a very small risk of side effects such as:

  • hyperpigmentation

  • hypopigmentation

  • infection

  • scarring

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will vary based on the type and color of the ink, the amount of ink used and the depth of the ink. Most people require more than one session. Dr. Dele-Michael will determine the number of sessions during your consultation.
