Although acne is extremely common, affecting 40 to 50 million people in the U.S. each year, the mechanism that causes acne is complex. It begins when the hair follicles are blocked, preventing oil from reaching the skin's surface. Trapped beneath the skin, the oil provides the ideal breeding environment for certain types of bacteria. As these bacteria grow, the body tries to fight them off by increasing its production of white blood cells, resulting in redness, inflammation and swelling, which in turn causes pimples, whiteheads, blackheads and cysts. Acne can occur anywhere on the face, neck, chest, back and arms, and in addition to these physical manifestations, acne also causes significant emotional distress and even depression in severe cases.
Dr. Dele-Michael offers an array of treatment options, including:
oral medications including Accutane
whitehead and blackhead extractions
Some treatments work better or are more appropriate for specific symptoms (pimples, cysts, blackheads and whiteheads). Dr. Dele-Michael will perform a comprehensive assessment of your skin and the manifestations of your acne so she can determine which treatment will work best. Many patients respond best to therapy that includes more than one type of treatment. Also, some treatments can become less effective over time, which means you may need to stop one type of treatment and begin another to continue to see results.
During your office visit, Dr. Dele-Michael will provide you with complete skin care advice to help keep your acne under control while also ensuring the skin stays clean and properly moisturized.
